Tivat began its urban development at the end of the 19th century when Arsenal, a military port was built in 1889. After more than half a century it was "invaded "by tourists. In 1954 the first tourist association was founded and in 1958 Hotel Mimoza was built laying the foundation for the development of tourism at the territory of Tivat Municipality.

Regarding the accommodation capacities Tivat has 1800 beds in hotels (6 big ones and 4 smaller ones) and several thousands beds in private accommodation (rooms and apartments), several  rest centres and 3 motor camps.

Tivat as a tourist resort has not defined yet clearly its own brand image but for sure it will aim at development of various tourist services: nautical, sports and recreational, congress and cultural tourism.

For all of those Tivat have preconditions as well as clear conception of tourism development according to Master plan for the development of tourism in Montenegro by 2020.The main goal is to increase the accommodation capacities for  high quality tourist offer
